RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY

Fillings (restorations) are used to replace tooth structure that is lost due to tooth decay. Fillings are also used to repair fractured, broken, or severely worn teeth.

RESIN FILLINGS

Fillings (restorations) are used to replace tooth structure that is lost due to tooth decay. Fillings are also used to repair fractured, broken, or severely worn teeth.

Resin (composite) fillings are very esthetic restorations since they are available in natural shades matching tooth color. Research in dental material has improved their performance in the oral cavity. Since resin restorations consist of a plastic matrix filled with ceramic or other types of fillers they are not considered the strongest restorative material. Therefore fillings do not last forever so it is essential that you visit the dentist regularly for further examinations. The dentist will monitor the integrity of your fillings during regular exams and will recommend replacing a filling if a problem is detected.

CROWNS

Quality Care

Crowns (caps) are restorations that cover the tooth externally to protect the heavily damaged or broken tooth from falling apart. Crowns are custom made in the laboratory using gold alloys, dental porcelains, or a combination of both.

Crowns are indicated when a tooth is heavily restored by other types of restorations, has root canal treatment, is functionally under extensive stress and needs support, and many other situations that could be diagnosed and treatment planned according to individualized patient needs.

Fabrication of crowns involves preparation of the tooth receiving the crown in the first visit, followed by making a very accurate impression of the tooth to be transferred to the prosthodontic laboratory. In the laboratory the dental technologist follows detailed instructions given by the clinician to create the most esthetic and functionally efficient crown. When the crown is fabricated fine tuning and adjustment is done in the patient’s mouth before final cementation.

INLAYS & ONLAYS

Quality Care

Inlays and onlays originally were fabricated using gold alloys. Gold onlay or inlay is still a very durable non esthetic alternative to other types of restoration in dentistry. By the introduction of porcelain (ceramic) inlays and onlays to dentistry, they can serve as an esthetic and durable alternative to resin restoration.

Porcelain inlays are basically customized ceramic fillings that are bonded to the cavity preparation on the tooth. Whereas onlays are larger piece of customized ceramic that could restore heavily decayed or damaged teeth that in some cases could not be saved otherwise.
